Not interested: Dean Ashton delivers scathing criticism of Arsenal midfielder
By Danny Wright
Dean Ashton believes that Mesut Ozil doesn’t look interested in playing for Arsenal at the moment.
The Arsenal midfielder has come in for a lot of criticism in recent weeks after a poor run of form which has only seen him make five Premier League assists all season, a stat he is usually a league leader in.
Players including Matt Phillips, Gyfli Sigurdsson and Nemanja Matic have all made more assists this season than the German World Cup winner.
Ashton, speaking to TalkSport, said: “He can be absolutely unbelievable, and as ex-players we all look at Mesut Ozil and just think – wow!
“But some days you can just see that he is not that interested.
“I think he’s probably one of those players who is a bit moody and you don’t really know what he’s thinking.”
Last season Ozil contributed 19 assists as Arsenal finished second in the Premier League – their highest league finish since 2004/05.
The Gunners faced a fierce backlash after back-to-back defeats to Watford and Chelsea, but appeared to have brushed that off when they eased past Hull in a 2-0 victory on Saturday.
Ozil faces a trip back to his native Germany on Wednesday night when his side take on Bayern Munich in the first leg of their round of 16 tie.
The 28-year-old scored in stoppage time against the Bavarian club in a 2-0 win at the Emirates last season in the Champions League group stage.
Arsenal then face an unfamiliar trip to non-league Sutton United in the FA Cup on Monday night.
