Dean Henderson: Newcastle United could pull off ‘great’ deal after £15m Man United news – pundit

Alex McLeish has suggested Newcastle United could pull off a “great” deal to sign Dean Henderson from Manchester United this summer.

The former Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 25-year-old needs to be playing regular first-team football after a difficult 2021/22 campaign.

As reported by the Northern Echo (29 May), Newcastle are set to table a £15million bid for Henderson and are confident of striking an agreement with Man United.

Eddie Howe is reportedly keen to overhaul his goalkeeping ranks at St James’ Park.

McLeish insisted Henderson needs game time to reach the peak of his powers over the coming years.

He suggested the eight-figure fee would be a “decent” price for Newcastle.

McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “He’s kind of heading towards his prime. He has to get first-team football at as high a level as he possibly can.

“I think £15million would be a great price. In modern-day thinking, it’s a great price. Obviously, you’d want to be assured that Dean is at his highest level and that he’s going to continue to be at his highest level for the next five to six years. Maybe beyond that.

“Goalkeepers have a long shelf life so £15million seems pretty decent. Dean has proved his worth in the past but he’s got to start playing.”

Martin Dubravka is currently Newcastle’s first-choice shot-stopper.

The Magpies also have Karl Darlow, Mark Gillespie and Freddie Woodman on their books.

Meanwhile, Henderson only played three times for Man United during the recently-finished campaign.
