Dean Henderson’s outburst will backfire as ‘diabolical’ Man United comments emerge – pundit

Noel Whelan has insisted Dean Henderson has simply piled more pressure on himself after his “diabolical” quotes about parent club Man United.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested every mistake the 25-year-old makes this season will be tied to this media outburst.

Speaking to talkSPORT (2 August), Henderson launched a scathing attack on Man United – branding the club “criminal” for “wasting 12 months” of his career on the sidelines at Old Trafford.

He claimed he was told by the club that he would be the number one goalkeeper after returning from Euro 2020 last year (2021).

Henderson has since completed a season-long loan to Premier League new boys Nottingham Forest, but there is no buy option in the agreement.

The England international made just three senior appearances during the 2021-22 campaign.

Whelan insisted Henderson should have simply proved Old Trafford chiefs wrong by performing well at Forest.

He told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury: “I thought they were absolutely diabolical comments.

“No-one is promised a first-team place. No striker, no goalkeeper, no full-back. It’s a bit childish really, and a bit bitter.

“If you’re that good, you’d have been given the gloves. It sounds like he’s spitting his dummy out.

“These comments could have been kept to himself. The only way to prove people wrong and turn things around is to go out there and perform.

“Now there’s more pressure on him at Nottingham Forest.

Every little mistake he makes this season will now come back to these remarks.”
