Dele Alli: Leeds missed out on ‘big coup’ as new transfer details emerge – Mills

Danny Mills has admitted he is surprised Leeds United did not add to their squad in January.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Whites and England defender suggested the club should have tried to beat Everton to the signing of Dele Alli.

The Yorkshire Post claimed on Tuesday (1 February) Leeds turned down the chance to sign Dele’s ex-Spurs teammate Harry Winks and his current Everton teammate Donny van de Beek on loan.

Instead, they opted to not add to the senior squad with 18-year-old Mateo Joseph Fernandez the only January arrival.

“I was a little bit surprised,” Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“We were told there was money to spend, money was available.

“There principle of not wanting to bring in anybody who wasn’t as good as who was already there, they wanted to bring in better. I understand that but sometimes you have to go out there.

“They’ve got good senior players, they’ve got some good youngsters. I understand they didn’t want to bring in players to hampen those young players but they are in a precarious position at the moment.

“From being told there was a lot of money to spend and not spending it, there are two questions to ask.

“Could they not get the deals done? Or, did they not feel those players were good enough to improve the squad.

“Even the likes of Dele Alli went on a free transfers. That would have been a pretty big coup in the end for Leeds.

“There were players out there who were available. Leeds were very interested in Aaronson and couldn’t get that deal done and will now have to wait until the summer.

“When you’re down there you need some sort of a psychological boost. Maybe Marcelo Bielsa doesn’t feel he needs that.”

In other news, Leeds United rejected ‘£120million’ worth of bids for three stars in January.
