Dele Alli shares post-deadline update as he waits on free transfer

Dele Alli has shared an update on his career as he prepares for a new opportunity after leaving Como in September last year.

Como signed Alli in January 2025, but, incredibly, he was sent off just nine minutes into his debut for the Italian side.

The appearance had been the midfielder’s first in two years, and it is his only appearance since, with Cesc Fabregas neglecting to hand him any minutes before he agreed to terminate his contract.

Burnley were linked with Alli after his departure from Como, but an offer from the Clarets never materialised.

There was speculation that Alli could be set to sign for Fiorentina in December, but that rumour did not come to fruition.

Many Tottenham fans would likely have Alli down among the most talented young players to have ever played at White Hart Lane.

The midfielder’s rise was meteoric. After joining from League One side MK Dons in 2015, the Englishman immediately hit 10 goals and provided nine assists as a 19-year-old in his first-ever Premier League season.

The next season, Tottenham fans were left wondering what type of astronomical talent they had stumbled upon when he netted a staggering 18 Premier League goals from midfield, adding seven assists for good measure.

But the decline was just as swift. Injuries and problems elsewhere saw Alli make fewer and fewer appearances every season before his 2022 move to Everton.

In the years since, the 29-year-old has opened up about the traumatic mental health issues that he had been suffering from at the time.

Alli will hope to return to football this year, and he took to social media on Tuesday to share a picture of the training he is undergoing in preparation.

European move likely for Alli

A move to France or Germany would appear a strong option for the next step of Alli’s career.

Both Ligue 1 and the Bundesliga contain clubs capable of paying the wages the midfielder would likely ask for, and their more attacking styles would complement the ex-England international.

Alli would likely want to return to the Premier League at some point, but at this stage, such a move appears a bridge too far.

The 29-year-old undoubtedly has the talent, but his fitness will need to be prioritised in the coming months.
