Derby County, Oxford and Plymouth race to sign Brendan Wiredu – sources

Derby County, Oxford United and Plymouth Argyle are plotting moves to sign Fleetwood Town’s Brendan Wiredu, sources have told Football Insider.

The midfielder was one of the shining lights for Fleetwood last season, captaining the side despite results which saw them relegated from League One.

Alongside the three Championship sides, League One trio Bolton, Blackpool and Wrexham, as well as Scottish outfit Hearts have also shown interest in his signature.

Fleetwood are determined to keep hold of the 24-year-old, but are bracing themselves for offers before the transfer window closes on 30 August.

Wiredu is highly rated throughout the EFL, and The Fishermen’s relegation last time out has put clubs on red alert over a possible deal.

Fleetwood Town hope to hold off interest in Brendan Wiredu from Derby, Oxford and Plymouth

Wiredu joined Fleetwood from Colchester United in 2022 for an undisclosed fee, and has established himself as a key player under Charlie Adam.

Last season, the midfielder featured 39 times across all competitions but was unable to save his side as they finished three points from safety.

He has just one year remaining on his current contract and the club could be forced to cash in on his signature or risk losing him for free next year.

Fleetwood have already lost the likes of Promise Omochere, Ben Heneghan and Harvey Macadam this summer and are reluctant to see another important player go.

The summer window is set to close on 30 August, leaving a scramble amongst interested clubs looking to finalise deals before their time runs out.

With multiple clubs now plotting bids for Wiredu, a bidding war is expected to begin in the coming weeks while Fleetwood look to hold on.
