‘Diabolical’, ‘Shocking’ – Everton fans want starter sold after ‘car crash’ display vs Newcastle
David Moyes will feel absolutely embarrassed after Everton’s disastrous performance at home against Newcastle United.
Everton managed to beat Man United despite going down to 10 men after Idrissa Gueye clashed with Michael Keane, but there was very little fight at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, 29 November.
On the opposite end of the spectrum, Eddie Howe‘s side were low on confidence after Newcastle lost to Marseille in the Champions League midweek, but the tables were turned at the weekend.
The Magpies raced into the lead inside a minute, thanks to Malick Thiaw, who later grabbed his brace, with goals in between coming from Lewis Miley and Nick Woltemade.
It was an embarrassing first 45 minutes for most of the home team, but fans were particularly critical of Tim Iroegbunam, who was inevitably hooked during the half-time break.

Tim Iroegbunam torn to shreds after ‘shocking’ first half vs Newcastle
Making an error for at least one of the goals, amongst the expletives, supporters described his performance as “shocking” and “horrendous”, and not many will disagree.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall grabbed one goal back, but by the time the Toffees finally got going, the game was way out of reach, and supporters will largely blame Iroegbunam’s “car crash” display for that.
- @clarke__78: “What a way to kill the momentum built after Monday night’s win. Diabolical performance from Iroegbunam. Minimum requirement is maximum effort, and he’s been nowhere near it. Tough watch.”
- @rulitos14: “He’s not responsible for Iroegbunam’s car crash of a first half, but it’s worth remembering that Iroegbunam is only playing because of Gueye’s stupidity. Puts the club’s smug videos this week into some context.”
- @Bluebailey55: “I think that confirms my opinion on Iroegbunam – get him sold in January.”
Iroegbunam’s performance by numbers in disappointing Everton defeat
Iroegbunam was not even allowed to come out for the second half before being hooked by Moyes, so it is clear to see that Moyes had the same opinion as the disgruntled fanbase.
While he was accurate with his crosses, he allowed far too much of the game to pass him by, failing to intervene with strong challenges, and quickly became the scapegoat on Merseyside.
| Tim Iroegbunam vs Everton | Stats [FotMob] |
| Minutes played | 45 |
| Errors leading to goal | 1 |
| Accurate crosses | 0% (0/1) |
| Dispossessed | 1 |
| Ground duels won | 50% (1/2) |
His error leading up to one of the goals was the most damning moment from his first-half performance, and after that, it seemed all of his teammates’ heads dropped in disappointment.
It might be quite a long time before Moyes puts the midfielder back into the lineup, though he might not have a choice in the matter, with Gueye still suspended after an unsuccessful appeal during the week.
