‘Representatives met’ – Premier League stalwart confirms Newcastle talks
West Ham manager David Moyes has confirmed that he held talks with Newcastle over becoming their boss back in 2016 to replace then-head coach Steve McClaren.
The Magpies were left fighting a relegation battle at the time of the former England manager’s departure, having seen his side comfortably beaten 3-1 at home by Bournemouth in his final game in charge.
They managed to bring former Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez to Tyneisde, who was unable to prevent their demise to the second tier of English football, but Moyes, a Premier League stalwart after stints with Everton, Manchester United and Sunderland, has confirmed that he was approached over the vacancy at St James’ Park.
The Scottish boss, who was brought in to replace Slaven Bilic at West Ham earlier this season, was quoted by Sky Sports as saying: “They did (contact me). I had contact with Newcastle.
“For different reasons, it didn’t quite come off but that’s right.
“Just for different reasons [it didn’t happen]. One of my representatives met Newcastle at the time, but for different reasons we didn’t do it.”
Moyes has over 600 games worth of experience with Premier League sides, having established himself at Everton where he took charge of over 500 matches with the Toffees.
Since taking on the role of manager at West Ham he has helped the Hammers escape the relegation zone, with Newcastle having found themselves slip into the bottom three instead, and saw his ninth match at the helm come against the Magpies on Saturday.
In other Newcastle United news, the club are expected to make an official move for a 13-goal hot shot.
