Dier is ‘awful’ and ‘nowhere near’ good enough for Tottenham – pundit

Tottenham will never succeed while Eric Dier continues to start games as a defender.

That’s according to former West Ham hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Spurs ever-present.

Dier, 27, started at centre-back as Tottenham lost 3-0 to Manchester United on Saturday night.

The defender has started all of Spurs’ Premier League games this season and was nominated for August’s player of the month award.

In July 2020, Dier told Sky Sports he wanted to be recognised as a defender despite playing in the midfield for the majority of his career.

McAvennie claims Dier is not good enough to play in either position and expressed disbelief over his continued selection.

“Where do you start with Eric Dier?” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s not a midfielder and he’s certainly not a defender. Tottenham fans are wondering why their team keeps losing.

“It’s because players like Dier are still there. He’s not good enough, it’s that simple.

“He doesn’t get in the England squad and England have two decent centre-backs at a push.

“He’s nowhere near. Tottenham will not succeed with Dier in the team. He’s awful.

“It’s plain to see he’s not good enough. I really don’t understand how he gets a game.”

Tottenham lie eighth in the Premier League table after their loss to Man United.

They are next in action against Vitesse in the Europa Conference League on Thursday.

In other news, this pundit has tipped Tottenham to “make waves” in January after new Levy U-turn.
