A disaster from day one: Rangers 31-year-old is 2016 flop of the year
By Harvey Byrne
Football Insider names the Rangers flop of the year for 2016.
Philippe Senderos has been a huge flop for the Gers in a successful year which has brought Premiership football back to Ibrox.
The 31-year-old completed a free transfer to Mark Warburton’s outfit in the summer, signing a one-year deal after being released by Swiss outfit Grasshoppers earlier in the year.
With appearances for Arsenal, AC Milan, Everton and Valencia under his belt over his career many were expecting him to be a good experienced signing to add to the Rangers back four.
However, this assumption could not have been more wrong with Senderos’ debut one he will be keen to forget.
The 57-time capped Switzerland international made his first appearance for the club starting in the back four against fierce rivals Celtic.
He lasted just 75 minutes on the pitch against the Hoops before being sent off for a second booking in the 5-1 defeat, where the Rangers side had already conceded four goals with Senderos on the pitch.
He has made just one appearance since then in a 2-0 victory over bottom of the league Partick Thistle, where he was also booked over the duration of the 90 minutes.
It is now unlikely that Senderos will see much more game time for the Ibrox giants and he could even be set for an early move away in January.
The defender joined Rangers with a big reputation, but he has now flopped beyond what many fans would have predicted in the summer and therefore he is the club’s biggest failure of 2016.
