'Disrespectful' - Exclusive: Whelan reacts to major Celtic-Ajer transfer update

Noel Whelan suggested that Celtic should expect to receive bids for Kristoffer Ajer this summer but not until the end of the English season.

The former Leeds United and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that it would be disrespectful for clubs to start bidding for players when their season is still ongoing.

Football Insider revealed that the Hoops would be willing to let the 22-year-old leave this summer if their £20million asking price was met.

The Daily Record claim that the Scottish champions have received no bids for the Norwegian centre-half despite interest from AC Milan and Leicester City.

However, Whelan insisted that potential bids would not arrive until after the completion of the Premier League.

“Teams in England are just concentrating on finishing the season,” he told Football Insider.

“Premier League teams will have targets but it would be disrespectful to the players they have already if they starting making bids for replacements.

“That would do no good for those that are currently playing week in, week out. You have to manage the situation otherwise a player would lose their mind.

“The bids will come when the season is done.”

Football Insider revealed last week that the Hoops have set their sights on the Benfica’s Branimir Kalaica along with Watford and Leeds.

A move for the 6 foot 4 inch defender would likely only be sanctioned if Ajer was sold.

In other Celtic news, Kevin Phillips has told Football Insider he has heard Premier League champion could be on his way to Parkhead.
