Doherty may be frozen out at Tottenham after ‘bizarre’ development – Mills

Matt Doherty has fallen out of favour under Nuno Espirito Santo at Tottenham, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Leeds United and England defender admitted he found Doherty’s status at Spurs “bizarre”.

The Republic of Ireland international now seems to be the third choice right-back in north London.

He has played just seven minutes of Premier League football so far this season as Japhet Tanganga has started all three games.

Instead, Doherty started both of the club’s Europa League Conference games last month.

Spurs added Emerson Royal from Barcelona on deadline day for a fee understood to be worth £25.7million.

Meanwhile, Serge Aurier has had his contract cancelled by mutual consent.

Asked who might be Spurs’ third choice this season, Mills told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “It doesn’t look like Doherty is in favour too much, bizarrely. That’s a real strange one.

“I think that’s a little bit odd given that obviously, Nuno knows him. He played his best football under Nuno at Wolves.

“It looks like he will be that one that misses out.

“I thought it was absolutely vital that Tottenham brought in two defenders over the summer. That’s really, really important.

“Tottenham have actually had a decent window.”

Doherty featured in 29 games across all competitions last season after making the £15million move from Wolves last summer.

The 29-year-old started just 13 Premier League games as he and Aurier failed to establish themselves as Jose Mourinho’s preferred choice.
