Doherty tipped to join Premier League rivals after being told by Tottenham ‘you can leave’ – pundit

Matt Doherty will leave Tottenham and join a Premier League club in January after being told he can leave.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider

On 22 December, The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare reported Doherty, 29, will be allowed to leave Tottenham in January.

Tottenham

The defender joined Tottenham from Wolves in the summer of 2020 but he has failed to nail down a starting position.

Despite new boss Antonio Conte utilising advanced wing-backs, the defender has not found a way to break into the side.

Kenny claims Doherty is still good enough to cut it in the Premier League and predicted he will find a move in January.

“He’s not taken off at Tottenham, has he?” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“He’s not played a lot for them. I had a look at how often he played for Wolves.

“In 10 years he played 26 odd games. He is a very experienced player so there will be Premier League clubs interested.

“We all know how good he was at Wolves. Where he goes, I don’t know.

“He’s at that age when he needs to be playing regularly so that will be his priority.

“I don’t blame him for making the move, Conte has clearly told him ‘you canleave’.

“It’s just a shame that it hasn’t happened for him.”

Tottenham

Doherty has made 10 appearances for Tottenham this season.

He has made four appearances in the Premier League but they have all been off the bench.
