Dominic Calvert-Lewin backed to accept ‘£25m’ Newcastle United move – Keith Wyness
Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Dominic Calvert-Lewin would be a “perfect” signing for Newcastle United this summer.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed he would “hate to see” the 27-year-old leave Merseyside, but admitted Everton could be unable to tie him down to a new contract.
According to The Telegraph (23 May), Newcastle are plotting a move for Calvert-Lewin in the summer transfer window.
The England international, who last played for the Three Lions in 2021, is only under contract at Everton until June 2025.
Calvert-Lewin made 38 appearances in a relatively injury-free 2023-24 campaign, notching eight goals and three assists.
Wyness backed the forward, who has hit 68 Everton goals in total, to return to the England setup in due course.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think he’d be a perfect Newcastle number nine, to be honest.
“He leads the line very well, he’s got an eye for goal – and when he’s fit, he’s fantastic.
“I think he will resume his England place pretty quickly.
“He’s got one year left on his contract, which is why the £25million valuation makes some sort of sense for both clubs.
“I think Dominic may consider that move, and Newcastle and their fans may well be very pleased if they can get him.
“Does the lack of European qualification make the difference in terms of Newcastle being able to spend? It’s gone very quiet.
“But I think Calvert-Lewin is in the mould of the great Newcastle strikers.
“I’d hate to see him leave Everton. I certainly hope he stays, but Everton have their own constraint in terms of what they can offer in a new contract.”
