Done deal: Everton striker agrees deal and leaves Goodison
By Matt Farr
Everton attacker Conor McAleny has completed his move to Fleetwood Town, it has been confirmed.
The League One outfit announced on their official club website and Twitter account on Friday morning that they had signed the Everton misfit on a three-year-deal.
McAleny was out of contract at Goodison Park at the end of the month, but was not set to be rewarded with a new deal, after it was confirmed on the Premier League website that he would be released at the end of the season.
The 24-year-old, who had joined Everton at the age of just 11-years-old, had managed just three first-team appearances throughout his stay at Goodison Park.
He was a regular performer for the Everton Under-23 side, contributing 26 goals and seven assists from 65 appearances, but also spent a large part of his Toffees career on loan in England’s lower leagues.
McAleny had spent time on loan at the likes of Scunthorpe United, Brentford, Cardiff City, Charlton Athletic, Wigan Athletic and Oxford United.
He gave an impressive showing in League One for Oxford during the 2016-17 season, scoring 10 goals from 19 appearances, and he has been offered a full-time stay in the division by rivals Fleetwood.
He becomes the club’s third summer signing after Kyle Dempsey and Harvey Rodgers, as manager Uwe Rosler seeks to bolster his squad ahead of the upcoming campaign.
Football Insider verdict
Everton were always right to allow McAleny to leave at the end of his contract. It can be a great shame to see a player who came through the ranks at the club fail to make the cut, but that is the harsh reality of football. He’s now 24-years-old, and was no closer to making a first-team breakthrough at Everton. Fleetwood Town, on the other hand, will be right up his street, because while it sees the attacker drop down two divisions, he has proven prolific at that level. It is now a case of McAleny bouncing back to fight his way back up to the top level, prove to Everton exactly what they will be missing.
In other Everton transfer news, the Toffees are reportedly set to re-ignite their pursuit of this £10million-rated goalscorer.
