Confirmed: Leeds agree terms of third signing in days
By Abigail Withey
Leeds United have confirmed goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald as the club’s newest signing.
The Yorkshire club revealed on Friday that the 27-year-old German would be the latest arrival at Elland Road after agreeing terms on a three-year-deal from Werder Bremen.
Leeds announced Wiedwald’s deal on the club’s official Twitter account in addition to the official website and said that the Whites were “delighted” to welcome the German.
The keeper is the third signing to be made under new boss Thomas Christiansen after the manager secured FC Twente’s Mateusz Klich and Liverpool academy star Madger Gomes within the last few days.
Wiedwald will now aim to be Christiansen’s first choice keeper at Elland Road but will face competition from the likes of Rob Green, Marco Silvestri and Bailey Peacock-Farrell.
When asked by the club about his move to the Championship outfit the 27-year-old expressed his delight and said: “I’m very happy to be here, this is a huge club with so much history and tradition, it is amazing to have signed.”
The former Bundesliga star also revealed that he had been in talks with the club over a move for a while: “We have been in contact for a long time and now I am here, Leeds United is a sleeping giant, it is a club with great supporters and the stadium is nearly always full, it is great to finally be here.”
Football Insider Verdict
Wiedwald is a great signing for Christiansen and looks a likely contender for the number one jersey, which would have to be handed over from Rob Green. The new keeper looks to be strong overall player, especially in one-to-one situations, so as Green enters the twilight of his career, it would be wise for the new boss to move him on during this transfer window in order to bring in more funds to bolster the rest of his squad. Christiansen looks to be making a real impact at the Yorkshire club so it would be expected to have a series of new signings, probably defenders, make their way to Elland Road this summer.
