Done deal: Manchester United sign player from Leeds
By Harry Sykes
Manchester United have completed the signing of goalkeeper Theo Richardson from Leeds United, it has been confirmed by his agent.
Charlie McNicholas, who works for the World in Motion agency, confirmed that his client had joined the Premier League giants from the Championship big hitters.
Richardson had a trial at United last season and impressed enough to catch the eye of Old Trafford coaches.
McNicholas took to his personal Twitter account on Tuesday to report that the 18-year-old had agreed a permanent contract with United after quitting Elland Road.
United seized upon the availability of Richardson, who was a mainstay of the Leeds Under-18s side for most of last season. before the second-tier club elected not to hand him a new contract beyond last month.
Lincoln-born Richardson has made the short move from Yorkshire to Greater Manchester as he bounces back from the disappointment of not getting a new Leeds deal.
According to United’s website, the teenager will join up with the Under-23s and the UEFA Youth League squad.
Richardson also has a profile on the club’s website, which reads: “Signed on a permanent contract after arriving on a short-term basis towards the end of the 2016/17 season.
“One of four keepers with the reserves squad at the training camp in Austria – with Kieran O’Hara, Max Johnstone and Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui – and likely to push for a place in the under-23s and UEFA Youth League squad.
“Formerly with Leeds United, he produced some outstanding performances when thrust into the Reds’ under-18 team.”
Richardson faces a battle to make a breakthrough with first-team regulars David de Gea and Sergio Romero ahead of him as well as the likes of Joel Pereira, Kieran O’Hara, Max Johnstone and Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui.
In other Leeds transfer news, the club have agreed the terms of a stunning £7million deal.
