Done deal: Midfielder signs as Wolves agree terms
By Matt Farr
Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder George Saville has completed a move to Millwall, it has been confirmed.
The Championship club announced on their official Twitter account and club website on Monday that the 24-year-old had quit Molineux for an undisclosed fee.
Saville was out of contract at the Midlands club at the end of this month, but had looked set to stay after he was named on the club’s retained list published by the EFL on their official website at the end of May.
However, it has now been confirmed that the former Chelsea youngster has put pen-to-paper on a three-year-deal at Championship newcomers Millwall, who earned promotion ahead of the new season via the play-offs.
Saville has previously enjoyed two separate spells at The Den, first during a six-month loan deal from Chelsea in 2013, and then more recently on loan from Wolves during the 2015-16 season.
He made a total of 57 appearances in all competitions for Wolves, having joined from Chelsea in 2014, scoring six goals and supplying one assist.
A central midfielder, Saville was only an intermittent starter for the club last season, appearing in five or more consecutive Championship matches on only two occasions.
Football Insider verdict
Wolves may have had plans for Saville when they announced that he would remain at the club beyond his soon-to-be-expiring contract, however, it appears more likely that they only looked to retain his services so that they could earn a fee from his sale. But it is also an possibility that the decision to keep him on board may have been made by former boss Paul Lambert, only for their current chief Nuno Espirito Santo to deem him surplus to requirements and reverse the decision. Nevertheless, Millwall is a club that has shown great trust in Saville during his career, and he will benefit once more from his stay at the Den.
In other Wolves transfer news, the departure of Lambert could have ramifications for the future of this 24-year-old.
