Done deal: Nottingham Forest finalise second signing of the week
By Danny Wright
Nottingham Forest have confirmed that they have completed the signing of Joe Coveney from Premier League giants Manchester City.
The Reds announced on their official Twitter account and official club website on Friday afternoon that the defender has penned a two-year contract and will join up with the Under-23 side ahead of the upcoming campaign.
The 18-year-old is Nottingham Forest’s second signing of the week as he follows in the footsteps of Barrie McKay, whose transfer from Rangers was finalised on Wednesday.
Jason Cummings’ move from Hibernian is the only other business that the Reds have managed so far.
Coveney was part of the Man City youth team that lifted the Under-18 Premier League North trophy last season and is known to be a ball-playing central defender.
Forest boss Mark Warburton has a reputation of either sticking with players that he has worked with previously or scoping out youngsters with a view to edging them towards senior football.
Of all the areas in the Reds squad, the centre of defence is perhaps one of the most padded out, with Michael Mancienne, Joe Worrall, Jack Hobbs and Matthew Mills to name but a few of the centre-backs currently with the club.
Football Insider Verdict
Coveney does seem to be like the sort of signing that Warburton was expected to make at Forest. He fits in with his philosophy snapping up youthful players and his ball-playing ability in the heart of defence means that he is a good fit to the current first-team tactics. As he is a product of the Man City youth academy, it’s fair to say that Coveney will be joining the Reds with a fair bit of pedigree to his name. The Citizens’ set-up is one of the best in the country, if not Europe, and working at their facilities for their top staff means that big things can be expected from the new teenage recruit.
