Done deal: Wolves confirm signing of defender from title holders

By Danny Wright

Wolves have confirmed they have completed the signing of defender Ruben Vinagre from Monaco on a season-long loan deal.

The West Midlands outfit announced on their official Twitter account and official website on Thursday afternoon that the 18-year-old had agreed to a temporary switch to Molineux where he will feature in both the first-team and Under-23 squad.

Left-back Vinagre joins from Ligue 1 title holders Monaco, but he has failed to make a senior appearance for the club since he moved from Sporting CP two years ago.

He spent last season on loan in his native Portugal with Academia Coimbra, but also failed to break into the first-team.

Wolves confirmed on their website that Vinagre will play for both for the development and senior squads next season as they try to slowly break him into Nuno Espirito Santo’s team.

The Portuguese manager has shown a ruthless attitude towards the transfer market this season and has clearly used his links back to his home nation to bolster his squad.

Ruben Neves signed from Porto in a Championship record deal while Roderick Miranda has also hooked up with the promotion candidates.

Football Insider Verdict

Vinagre is probably nowhere near the first-team at Monaco, so it makes sense for him to look for a temporary move away from the principality. However loan deals can be completely useless when they aren’t done correctly and he might be better off staying with his parent club if he isn’t going to get any experience of first-team football with Wolves. Vinagre didn’t feature for Academia last season when it probably would have been more worthwhile for him to play in the Monaco development team. Nuno has made some good buys this transfer window which will surely push the West Midlands outfit near to the top end of the Championship next season. However the capture of Vinagre doesn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense.
