Dramatic fall from grace of Celtic defender shows how quickly football can change
COMMENT
It wasn’t that long ago that Jozo Simunovic signed a new long-term contract with Celtic and was part of a team which recorded a very rare Champions League group stage away win against Anderlecht.
Times have since changed though, and many fans seem indifferent to the possible departure of the 23-year-old in the January transfer window.
Burnley have been linked with the Bosnian, with the Scottish Sun reporting that they are set to bid around £8million for the centre-back.
The money is good for a player with Simunovic’s injury issues, but the main reason that fans seem so nonplussed with the possible exit of a player who won the treble with the Hoops last season is that his form has regressed so badly.
Simunovic had played poorly against PSG in the Champions League, which is understandable but fans haven’t seemed to forgive the player for his dreadful performance in the 4-0 defeat to Hearts, which saw Celtic’s domestic unbeaten run come to an end.
Another reason for the fans’ reaction is the emergence of Kristoffer Ajer, who replaced Simunovic in the first-team and the 19-year-old has helped the Hoops keep four clean sheets in a row.
If the Bosnian leaves in the January it won’t seem like the big deal it may have only four months ago.
