Eddie Howe: Expert issues Newcastle ‘agenda’ verdict after PGMOL talks revealed

Paul Robinson has slammed the officiating in Newcastle United’s 1-0 loss at Chelsea on Sunday.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Premier League goalkeeper does not believe there is “an agenda” against Eddie Howe’s side despite numerous “very, very bad decisions this season.”

The Magpies left Stamford Bridge aggrieved on Sunday after two controversial decisions by the officials.

Referee David Coote and VAR official John Brooks opted against awarding a penalty to Jacob Murphy and against sending off Kai Havertz, much to the dismay of the visitors.

According to The Athletic’s Chris Waugh (16 March), the north-east club have spoken with PGMOL boss Mike Riley after Sunday’s controversies.

It is not the first time this season Newcastle have been on the end of controversial officiating, with decisions against Man City, Liverpool and Leicester City questioned.

When asked if the Toon Army had a right to feel like there was an agenda against them, Robinson told Football Insider:

“I don’t know about an agenda but they have been on the end of a few very, very bad decisions this season.

“The Murphy one at the weekend against Chelsea was a stonewall penalty. How a referee on VAR cannot see that and let the referee on the field know that he’s made a mistake I do not know. It was one of the most blatant penalties you will see.

“Two massive decisions that the referee and VAR got wrong. Newcastle have every right to feel hard done by. They will want answers.”
