Eddie Howe under ‘big pressure’ at Newcastle United after ‘huge’ development – pundit

Frank McAvennie has insisted Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has proven he’s got what it takes to compete in the Champions League next season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former West Ham striker claimed Newcastle will be challenging for the Premier League title next season.

The Magpies confirmed their spot in the Champions League next season last week (22 May) with their 0-0 draw against relegation contenders Leicester City.

The Toon have seen a massive turnaround since they were taken over by the Saudi Public Investment Fund in 2020 and guaranteed themselves a top four finish before the last day of the season.

The league standing demonstrates a marked improvement on previous finishes of 11th, 12th and 13th over the last three seasons since their promotion back in 2017.

When asked if Howe has what it takes to lead Newcastle to the top European competition next season, McAvennie told Football Insider:I think he has come in and shown that he can do it in the biggest league in the world.

He has gone toe to toe with the big boys. He has certainly earned the right to be up there, which is huge. Now they have got to do that every year.

It is big pressure but I think Newcastle are on the up. They will be hoping to challenge again for Europe next year and challenge for the league.

I think they are a couple of years away from challenging Man City to go all the way but certainly next year to get to the Champions League again, that is their aim.
