‘Embarrassing’ Man United verdict issued by pundit after Frenkie de Jong update from Spain

Alan Hutton has claimed it would be “embarrassing” for Man United if Chelsea win the race to sign Frenkie de Jong.

The ex-Spurs and Aston Villa defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suspects Erik ten Hag is becoming “frustrated” with the De Jong situation.

According to Spanish outlet Sport (6 August), Chelsea have submitted a bid of £59million plus Marcus Alonso in an attempt to beat United to the 25-year-old.

The Netherlands international is said to want to stay at Barcelona.

The midfielder currently has four years remaining on his contract at the Nou Camp.

When asked for his assessment of the latest, Hutton told Football Insider: “It will be embarrassing, there’s no doubt about that.

De Jong was their number one target for this summer. Obviously Ten Hag identified him to come in and be a main player within that system, within that squad. Midfield is where they needed strengthening.

It’s been going on for weeks now, we’re talking about Manchester United, one of the biggest clubs in the world. If you want him that much just go and get him. I don’t really know what’s going on in the background with finances and stuff like that.

To lose someone like that to a rival, who you’re going to be challenging with is not ideal. It probably frustrates the manager. He would know the players he wants in from day one as soon as he walked through the door.

Man United

It just seems that it’s been dragging on for weeks and weeks and weeks now. If he’s your number one target go and get him. Get him through the door and start to get to work.

It just hampers him moving forward because if it gets done in weeks to come, they’ve already started the season and he’s not up to speed yet, it’s not helping him.
