‘Embarrassing’ Rangers fans slammed over protests – ‘It’s near-riots up here’, says Glasgow expert

Rangers fans who are protesting their club’s involvement in the Sydney Cup are “embarrassing”.

That’s according to former Hoops hitman Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after protests from Gers fans during their side’s game against Dundee (20 March).

Kick-off was delayed and the game was stopped several times thanks to protests from the travelling Rangers fans.

They were protesting the club’s decision to take part in the Sydney Cup tournament in November, in which they will face Celtic.

McAvennie has slammed the response to this news from both the club and Rangers fans.

“It’s near-riots up here, that’s all the talk,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“Whatever happens, this game is not going to be a friendly, that’s for sure.

“Everything that happened at the weekend was a bit ridiculous to be honest.

“The fans over here don’t want the fans over in Australia to watch them.

“That’s what it seems like to me. The club has to make the money somehow.

“It’s embarrassing from both sides, frankly. Some of the things the fans are doing, it’s becoming a bit of a sideshow now.

“It’s the club versus the fans again and the club don’t need that.

“Something needs to change but I’m not sure what that is, to be honest.

“I don’t think it will be cancelled and the fans won’t accept that so it’s a tricky one.”

Rangers

As per The Daily Record (17 March), Rangers are now considering “aborting” their plans to play the friendly fixture after a backlash from fans.

The report also claims the Gers will receive a seven-figure fine if they pull out.

In other news, pundit claims Ibrox hero is the “biggest problem” at Rangers now.
