‘Embarrassment’ – BBC pundit delivers verdict on Rangers boss Caixinha after Motherwell defeat
By Aramide Oladipo
BBC pundit Steven Thompson has heaped heavy criticism on Rangers manager Pedro Caixinha following the club’s disappointing start to the season.
The Ibrox club were dumped out of the Scottish League Cup at the semi-final stage against Motherwell on the weekend after losing 2-0 at Hampden Park.
Caixinha endured a miserable afternoon after referee Steven McLean sent him to the stands after the Portuguese clashed with Motherwell boss Stephen Robinson on the touchline.
The result means that the Gers failed to book themselves in the final to face Old Firm rivals Celtic who defeated Hibernian the previous day.
Speaking on the BBC Sportscene (Sunday, October 22), former Rangers man Thompson believes that it is time for Caixinha to leave the club.
“I honestly can’t see how he can continue in the job,” he said.
“Dumped out of Europe at the start of the season, that was an embarrassment.
“Are they any closer to Aberdeen? Not really in my opinion.
“Now out the cup in the semi-final, throw in the Kenny Miller stuff, the Old Firm defeat.
“It doesn’t matter how you spin it, it’s just not good enough for Rangers Football Club.”
This is Caixinha’s first full season in charge at Ibrox but his side has failed to live up to expectations after bringing in nine new players during the summer transfer window.
The new recruits were signed to close the gap between themselves and bitter rivals Celtic but Rangers struggled to match the Hoops in the derby, losing 2-0 at Ibrox last month.
Caixinha’s side now find themselves in third position in the league table and six points behind Celtic and Aberdeen.
In other Rangers news, Caixinha has said who should be to blame for the Hampden Park loss.
