‘Emery rejects Aston Villa exit for Martinez, walks out of Old Trafford interview’

Unai Emery was seemingly frustrated when asked about the future of Emiliano Martinez, at Aston Villa’s clash with Manchester United.

Martinez was sent off in the closing stages of the first half against the Red Devils, taking out forward Rasmus Hojlund, who looked to be through on goal.

It could be the last time he’s seen in a Villa shirt, with a potential departure on the horizon after five years in the Midlands.

At the start of the month (7 May), Football Insider exclusively revealed that Martinez could leave Aston Villa this summer, with a number of Saudi Pro League clubs interested.

The Argentinian international even appeared to wave goodbye to the Villa Park crowd, as he emotionally left the pitch after Emery’s side beat Tottenham 2-0 (16 May).

Emery says Martinez will stay

Aston Villa went into their final day game at Old Trafford needing a win to secure their place in the Champions League for next season, as well as other results to go their way.

Before the match, Emery was quizzed by TNT Sports (25 May) about the uncertain future of his shot-stopper.

When asked if today would be the last time we see Martinez play for Aston Villa, Emery replied: “No way,” before adding, “see you later,” and promptly walking out of the interview.

It’s not the first time that the 53-year-old has raised eyebrows in interviews this season, with Emery confusing viewers ahead of Villa’s game with Bournemouth earlier this month.

The Spaniard kept repeating the word “Europe” in an awkward encounter, which seemed to highlight the importance of finishing in the Champions League places.

Martinez vital for Villa

Despite what Emery had to say, the rumours surrounding Martinez and his potential exit will rumble on throughout the summer.

The Argentinian international has started 37 out of a possible 38 games in the Premier League this season, only missing Villa’s trip to Brentford back in March.

In fact, since his arrival from Arsenal back in 2020, Martinez has only missed nine league games in total for the Birmingham-based club.

If he were to depart, the 32-year-old would leave a big hole for Villa to fill, as they would not only have to replace his reliability but also his impressive shot-stopping qualities.

Football Insider exclusively revealed that Aston Villa are interested in bringing Aaron Ramsdale to the club, following his relegation with Southampton.

Ramsdale would certainly be an adequate replacement, considering his prior experience fighting for a Premier League title at Arsenal.
