By Danny Wright
Ben Woodburn could be announced as part of Chris Coleman’s Wales squad on Thursday, according to a report.
The Daily Mail reports that the English-born 17-year-old could make his first senior international appearance against the Republic of Ireland in a World Cup qualifier.
The Liverpool academy sensation was born in Chester and is eligible to play for England.
However Woodburn has played for Wales at four different youth levels and has four Under-19 caps to his name.
“He’s knocking on the door now,” said Wales assistant boss Osian Roberts, as quoted by Sky Sports News.
“What’s definite is that there are a lot of young players in this group doing that. And we need that. We’re really pleased with them.”
Woodburn has been in hot form this season for the Liverpool development side in Premier League 2.
He has six goals and bagged six assists for the Under-23 side during the current campaign.
The winger was also made his Liverpool first team debut this season when he came off the bench against Sunderland in a 2-0 win.
Just days later, Woodburn scored his first senior competitive goal in football when he scored in the Reds’ 2-0 win over Leeds in the EFL Cup semi-final.
Woodburn has made a total of seven first team appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side this season.
Wales have an away trip to Ireland in Group D of the European qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Coleman’s side are currently four points behind their next opposition who top the group.
