Enzo Maresca sack: ‘Chelsea bosses update emerges amid fan fury’

Chelsea are reportedly set on a decision over the future of manager Enzo Maresca despite the recent downturn in form.

The Italian only took charge at Stamford Bridge in the summer, having guided Leicester City to the Championship title in his first season managing in England during the 2023/24 campaign.

After a strong start under the 45-year-old, things have gone awry for the Blues recently, with just three wins in their last ten matches in all competitions.

Chelsea have been knocked out of both domestic cup competitions, following their controversial loss to Brighton in the FA Cup on Saturday (8 February).

Meanwhile they are also 14 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League table with 14 games to go, meaning the UEFA Conference League looks to be their only hope of silverware this season.

Chelsea hatch Enzo Maresca plan after comments leave fans fuming

Speaking earlier this week, Maresca suggested Chelsea are not currently capable of competing for multiple trophies in a single campaign, angering fans with many calling for him to leave.

According to the Daily Mail however, the club’s bosses are planning to back the Italian, given he is little more than six months into a five-year contract that also includes the option of a further year.

As a result it appears as though Pep Guardiola’s former Man City assistant will be staying at Stamford Bridge for the time being, despite what supporters might want.

It is also noted that the club are planning to support Maresca in strengthening the squad in the summer transfer window.

A new striker is apparently on the agenda, with recent injuries to the likes of Nicolas Jackson leaving Chelsea short of options to lead the line in attack.

Todd Boehly taking new approach with manager plan

Football Insider Verdict

This idea of backing Maresca does feel like something of a diversion from the norm for those in charge at Stamford Bridge.

In the past, both Roman Abramovich and current owner Todd Boehly have shown they are not afraid to make a quick change of manager when things are not going well for Chelsea.

However, this seems to suggest that such a stance is not going to be taken with Maresca, meaning fans may need to be patient given their recent frustrations.

Of course, there were signs of promise earlier in the season, and with what is still a young side, there may be a chance they can rediscover that form as they gel and adapt to the league even more.

Chelsea therefore may now be playing something of a waiting game, although they will expect new signings in the summer to help fill gaps in the squad to speed things a long somewhat.

It will therefore be interesting to see just how long they are willing to back Maresca for in the face of recent history.
