Enzo Maresca sends ‘tough’ message after sack pressure at Chelsea

Enzo Maresca took to social media after Chelsea secured Champions League football with a win over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Levi Colwill‘s second-half goal made all the difference on Sunday, 25 May, as the Reds slipped into the Europa Conference League spot in the Premier League table.

Mick Brown told Football Insider in April that Chelsea could sack Maresca after the board took into consideration the noise from the Stamford Bridge faithful, though that pressure looks to have subsided.

Many supporters expected the club to part ways with the Italian, but with the Blues now set to play Champions League football next season and lift silverware in the coming days, that no longer looks to be the case.

Taking to Instagram (26 May), Maresca wrote: “Good morning, Chelsea fans! What a way to finish the Premier League. 20 wins and 20 pictures.

“A very long journey with some tough and challenging moments along the way, but this squad showed incredible character, a unique togetherness and believed in our style throughout.

“We did it – and we did it in our way. Many thanks to all our fans for your support during the season. Now we head to Wroclaw, where we hope to bring you the trophy.”

Football Insider verdict

Glen Johnson told Football Insider that Chelsea could sack Maresca due to his record after falling out with supporters, but those behind the scenes at Stamford Bridge seem fully behind the manager now.

Fans were forced to wait right until the final day of the Premier League season to secure Champions League football, finishing above Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Forest.

The 45-year-old made the ill-advised decision to criticise the home support during the 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town last month, but he has turned the tables at Stamford Bridge.

One game remains for the Blues, jetting off to Poland to face Real Betis in the Europa Conference League final on Wednesday, 28 May, and a piece of silverware would be a great ending to the season.

It would certainly prove that Maresca’s plans are finally taking shape at Stamford Bridge, and if awarded enough time by Todd Boehly, it is impossible to tell how far Chelsea can go in the Premier League and Europe.

There are likely to be significant bumps along the road, but with the fans now backing the manager, it is an exciting journey for the Blues to join as the club attempts to return to its better times.
