Erling Haaland sends message to Dominik Szoboszlai after what Liverpool star did vs Barnsley

Man City’s Erling Haaland sent a message of positivity after Dominik Szoboszlai was a main talking point during Liverpool’s win over Barnsley.

Arne Slot remains under pressure at Anfield despite a 4-1 win over League One opposition on Monday, 12 January, with Xabi Alonso being tipped for a move to Merseyside after departing Real Madrid.

Adam Phillips kept Barnsley’s dreams alive during their FA Cup third-round tie, coming after goals from Szoboszlai and Jeremie Frimpong, but the Reds progressed after efforts from Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike.

With 28 appearances already under his belt this season, Szoboszlai is a key member of Slot’s team, though some moments from the FA Cup game are best left forgotten this time around.

Despite opening the scoring at Anfield, the Hungarian international was at fault for the visitors’ goal on the night, messing around with possession at the back before tripping over his own feet.

Before that had even happened, though, Haaland had taken to social media with a message for the playmaker, watching live as he slammed a long-range effort past goalkeeper Murphy Cooper.

Taking to Snapchat (12 January), the Man City star wrote: “Domi, what a goal. Smile a bit,” after Szoboszlai showed very little emotion despite his outrageous strike from the best part of 30 yards.

Liverpool fans are finally seeing the best of Wirtz, but it was a very different evening for the 25-year-old, who will be hoping to put the game behind him when the Reds face Burnley on Saturday, 17 January.

What did Szoboszlai say after Liverpool’s win over Barnsley?

Szoboszlai is never afraid of speaking out after games, and he has been a key spokesperson for the team, especially after a tough run of games across all competitions before the New Year.

After the game, the midfielder said, “I’m sorry for the team. “I made it hard for us with an easy mistake. But football happens, and we take it and move onto the next round.

“We always take the FA Cup seriously, whoever we play, but it shows we need the full squad. The players who came in showed their quality.”

That is certainly not how a lot of supporters felt, having also been called out by Conor Hourihane for not respecting the League One club, being far too casual inside his own penalty area.

In the end, Premier League talent shone through at Anfield, with the Reds progressing to the fourth round of the FA Cup, but it was far more challenging than many expected.
