Kieran Maguire delivers verdict on Everton potentially sacking Benitez after Moshiri talks confirmed

Everton must “continue backing” Rafael Benitez if they are to have any hope of developing a successful long-term business model.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the concerning situation at Goodison Park.

Per the Liverpool Echo on Wednesday (15 December), the under-fire Benitez confirmed he is in regular dialogue with owner Farhad Moshiri.

There was some respite for Benitez after his side earned a creditable 1-1 draw away to Chelsea on Thursday (16 December).

But the Toffees have still won just one of their last 11 matches, a run of form which led to the recent dismissal of director of football Marcel Brands.

Brands’ premiership was characterised by what many perceived to be a frivolous transfer policy, leaving them in deep financial fair play trouble.

Maguire insists that having won the “power battle” between himself and Brands, Everton must now get behind the manager’s strategy.

“If you are running a club, what you need is a long-term approach,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“Many players are on four or five-year contracts. So it’s a bit like changing the direction of a supertanker. It takes a long time to change course.

“It was clear that there was a power battle between Benitez and Brands. Benitez has clearly persuaded them to back him.

“Now they have done that, they need to continue backing him.”

Everton will be forced to find creative solutions to their current problems as their £139.9million annual loss limits their recruitment capabilities.

After detailing his talks with Moshiri, Benitez emphasised that “the problems are not just something you can fix in five months.”
