Kieran Maguire issues ‘£264m’ Everton reveal after Moshiri probe news

Farhad Moshiri will be deeply unhappy with the return on his huge investment in Everton since he took hold of the club in 2016.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Toffees’ stagnation in recent years.

Per The Athletic’s Paddy Boyland on Tuesday (28 December), Moshiri has requested a broad review into how Everton operate behind the scenes.

The 66-year-old tycoon is understood to be seeking answers on whether to scrap the director of football role recently vacated by Marcel Brands.

There will be input from individuals at all levels into the failings of the last five years, during which Everton have finished higher than 8th just once.

Maguire insists that it is no surprise to hear of Moshiri’s investigation given his vast outlay.

“Everton’s wage bill has gone from £86m in 2016 to £165m in 2020,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“I suspect it will be higher again in 2021. That clearly shows that Moshiri has not got a signficant return on his investment.

“If you look at another metric, wages plus amortisation plus impairment costs, that has gone up from £106m to £264m in the Moshiri regime.

“An impairment cost is where you sign somebody and realise he’s rubbish.

“You might sign a player for £40m on a five-year deal and impair him at £8m-a-year.

“So in the books after one year, he’d be valued at £32m because you’ve taken off his amortisation.

“But you might realise that realistically, you aren’t going to get more than £20m. So you put through an impairment cost of £12m.

“Everton had some significant impairment costs in the past four or five years. That’s indicative of a recruitment strategy that isn’t firing on all cylinders.

“Moshiri is going to be disappointed. But sometimes spending big money doesn’t necessarily work because you’re coming from a relatively low base.

“If you are changing the culture of a club as well as you look to accelerate that growth, that comes at a risk.”
