Everton ‘could get a phone call saying they’re in the Championship’ – pundit

The profit and sustainability charge against Everton will psychologically impact other Premier League relegation battlers.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, former England and Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson claimed the rise in PSR charges has caused a “huge snowball” of fear among struggling clubs.

The Toffees have a second hearing for an alleged breach relating to their 2022-23 accounts next week which could see them deducted further points after their six-point sanction earlier this season.

Potential points deductions or successful appeals for the Toffees and Nottingham Forest could be heard after the season ends, meaning some clubs may not know if they’ve been relegated on the final day of the campaign.

Everton charge causing “snowball” of fear in Premier League

Robinson was adamant that the Toffees’ second charge has impacted their on-field performances and added unnecessary pressure on other relegation contenders amid uncertainty around points tallies.

“Everton were the first lambs to the slaughter,” he told the Inside Track podcast.

“The way the manager had managed to rally the team and get the togetherness back, it does seem to have drifted away a bit recently.

“This second potential points deduction looming seems to have affected them.

“These rules have come in, they were dealt with so quickly and so harshly.

“The Forest punishment does seem fairer, but we’re in uncharted territory.

“The fact that teams are allowed to appeal and it would go past the end of the season – for me, it’s a joke.

“The pressure on players in a relegation battle is incredible.

“Everton could get three points, stay up and have a massive pitch invasion, but a week later they could get a phone call saying they’re in the Championship because of a points deduction.

“It’s not good for anybody and not healthy.

“Points changes have a psychological impact on all the teams in the relegation battle as their future is uncertain.

“The rules and regulations have to be regulated in a way that’s fair and honest for all the teams.

“It’s a huge snowball that’s gathering pace and getting bigger and bigger – it’s not going away.

“Nobody is getting it right.”
