Everton could lose Anthony Gordon in cut-price deal after talks update – pundit

Noel Whelan has claimed Everton star Anthony Gordon is “holding all the aces” in contract negotiations after big-money interest from Chelsea and Tottenham in the summer window.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Toffees would have to cave to the 21-year-old’s demands to avoid losing him for a cut-price fee.

According to The Sun (15 October), talks between Everton and Gordon have stalled due to the wingers’ £100,000-a-week wage demands.

The report claims the England Under-21 international’s camp are looking for a salary which reflects his £60million valuation – which was quoted to interested parties Chelsea and Tottenham during the off-season.

Gordon has scored twice in nine Premier League starts but was banned for Saturday’s (15 October) away defeat at Spurs after accumulating five yellow cards.

His current Goodison Park contract runs until the summer of 2025.

Whelan insisted Liverpool-born Gordon will remain “professional” even if a deal cannot be struck.

He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t think the interest is going to go away.

“He’s pricing Everton out because he knows that he’s wanted. With that, comes a high price to pay in wages for a player like Gordon.

“He’s young, up and coming, he’s got big interest. They’ve rejected offers in the summer, and that means Gordon knows he is now in the driving seat.

“He’s holding all the aces here, and if Everton can’t pay what he wants then he’ll sit on what he’s got.

“He’ll be professional and put the performances in, but it just leaves everything dangling.

“It just gives Everton a choice. Do they cash in for a smaller price, or do they give him what he wants?”
