Medical expert: Yerry Mina’s season could be over after ‘significant’ news from Everton

Yerry Mina’s season could be over if he requires surgery to address his latest injury setback at Everton.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Mina broke down with a quadriceps issue in the 3-1 defeat at Newcastle United last Tuesday (8 February).

It is the 27-year-old Colombian defender’s third thigh injury of the 2021-22 campaign.

Frank Lampard told Sky Sports last Friday (11 February) that he hoped he would not need surgery but that a recovery could take “eight to 10 weeks.”

But Dinnery insists that surgery is not out of the equation and that there is a possibility Mina will not play again this term.

“Given that timeline, we’re looking at a high grade-two,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Willimas

“It’s probably rectus femoris, the big muscle at the anterior aspect of that thigh. We are talking about significant fibre damage.

“Ideally, they will treat it conservatively. But you can’t rule out surgery at this time.

“He will meet with a specialist to hopefully rule that out but there are no guarantees.

“He is pivotal to that Everton team. If you look at their win ratios when he is and isn’t in that team, it’s night and day.

“Trying to keep him fit has been the difficult thing in recent seasons. There are a lot of ongoing muscular problems that have hampered him.

“That 10-week turnaround, it could even be May if we get to a worst-case scenario.

“Then you start to question if it is even worth bringing him back for the end of the season. Possibly, that could be season-ending. There are no guarantees.”

Mina has netted once in 11 outings this term.

His Everton side are 16th in the league table after their 3-0 victory over Leeds United last Saturday (12 February).
