Everton fans name club’s worst ever player, he had a nightmare debut v Liverpool
By Will Butcher
Defender Glenn Keeley has been named Everton’s worst ever player by fans after pulling on the blue of Everton’s strip for just 37 minutes back in 1982.
Football magazine FourFourTwo identified defender Keeley as the worst player to ever feature for Everton in their history, as they continue their run down of each club’s biggest flop.
Keeley, 62, was handed his debut for the Toffees in a Merseyside derby 35 years ago, but just just over half an hour later he was given his marching orders for a foul on Kenny Dalglish.
On loan from Blackburn, it was apparent that the defender had not learned the newly-implemented professional foul rule, as his red card contributed to a humiliating 5-0 loss.
“On loan from Blackburn, the big centre-half wasn’t match-fit nor attuned to the new rule about ‘the professional foul’ which made for an automatic sending off,” the FourFourTwo report read.
“Liverpool had Dalglish, Rush, Souness, Hansen and Lawrenson in peak form and, to resist them, we had Keeley.
“At least we did, until he grabbed at Dalglish’s shirt (the closest he got to him all day) and jogged off after seeing red. The horror!”.
Despite being an icon with Lancashire club Blackburn after 370 league appearances, Keeley failed to feature for the Toffees again.
The London-born defender also turned out for the likes of Newcastle, Oldham and Bolton before finishing his career in non-league football with folded club Colne Dynamos.
Ronald Koeman’s side will be hoping no repeat of Keeley’s dismal debut occur against Liverpool next time out, as the Merseyside giants go head to head on April 1 at Anfield.
In other Everton news, three players the Toffees could sign with a FIFA 17 shooting rating of over 85.
