Everton fans will be ‘very concerned’ by John Textor takeover latest – Borson

Everton fans are likely to be “very concerned” after John Textor’s takeover bid hasn’t progressed forward in recent weeks.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s going to be difficult for the American businessman to sell his Crystal Palace shares.

Textor was granted a period of exclusivity on 15 August to buy Everton owner Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1-per-cent stake at Goodison Park.

But one complication is the 58-year-old’s 45-per-cent stake in Palace, with Premier League rules forbidding ownership of two clubs in the same division.

The Guardian reported on 21 August Textor had jetted in to Liverpool to hold further talks with Moshiri and a deal was expected to be agreed by the end of that week.

The newspaper also said the American is confident that arranging a financing deal for the Merseysiders’ new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock could allow him to delay completing the takeover until as late as January.

But there has been no official update on where the takeover deal is currently at, raising questions about how much progress has been made between the two parties.

After speaking to several people involved with the club, journalist Matt Slater told The Athletic FC Podcast on 4 September there isn’t currently anything happening on the takeover front.

Borson believes it’s going to be difficult for Textor to do anything while the uncertainty remains over his Palace shares.

“I would be very concerned if I was an Everton fan,” Borson told Football Insider.

“The reporting this week suggests that there is nothing going on.

“The Athletic claimed that, having spoken to all the parties, it was all quiet and that there were no new potential bidders.

“But John Textor has what appears to be an unsurmountable problem right now with his Palace shares.

“I don’t think they are going to be easy to sell to a third party.

“It’s a minority stake in a club where there are some pretty strong-minded partners, so I would think it’s going to be hard for Textor to be in a position to do anything, even in January.”
