Everton in ‘really good position’ to seal Leander Dendoncker deal after journalist’s update – pundit
Noel Whelan has insisted Everton are in a “really good position” to sign Wolves star Leander Dendoncker as his contract dwindles.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Molineux club “can’t afford” to let the 27-year-old enter the final year of his contract if he doesn’t want to renew.
According to journalist Fabrizio Romano (22 July), Dendoncker is on Frank Lampard’s shortlist as Everton search for a “quality midfielder” this summer.
He claims the Toffees are ready to “explore” a move for the 29-time Belgium international – who is currently out of contract next summer.
However, Wolves have the option of extending the midfielder’s contract by a further year.
Whelan suggested the Midlands club may be forced to cash in on the former Anderlecht star this summer.
“This is what happens when the power shifts from club to the player,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“When you’re in that contract situation, one year left – the club won’t want it to dwindle down and get nothing for a player like Dendoncker.
“One year left with an option for another, it’s a real conundrum. What do they do?
“These days you can’t afford to let players go down to the final year, so it puts the player and Everton in a really good position to make the move happen.

“Wolves’ hands are tied. Unless they believe they can get his full value next summer, they almost have to do a deal.
“If he doesn’t want to be at the club, it’s best for all parties to allow him to move on and get that money in for a replacement before the season starts.”
