Everton may have to ‘shelve stadium plans’ amid ‘crippling’ financial verdict – pundit
Everton may have to shelve new stadium plans if they drop down to the Championship.
That is the view of former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the potentially “crippling effect” of relegation.
The Toffees are deep in a relegation battle after winning just two of their last 12 Premier League fixtures.

On 8 March, the Daily Mail reported that the Merseyside club could be deducted points amid fears they could breach the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
When asked for his assessment of Everton’s footballing and financial situation, Robinson told Football Insider: “If Everton go down they are in massive trouble.
“All of these plans for the new stadium will be shelved.
“They are in financial fair play trouble in the Premier League, never mind if they are in the Championship. You can only imagine the wage bill at that club. They have grossly overspent. Their recruitment has been terrible over the past few years.
“If they go down, it could have crippling effect on the club. It is not something that will be fixed quickly.
“The worse case scenario for Everton would be starting next season in the Championship with a 12-point deduction.

“They have spent so badly over the years, it’s already a huge problem. If they do down it escalates that problem.
“They are not in a good place. They desperately need to stay in the league.”
