Everton might be about to sign the next Coleman after bid latest – Whelan

Noel Whelan claims Rangers starlet Nathan Patterson could be the Seamus Coleman replacement Everton are looking for.

The former Aberdeen hitman, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted to the latest on the defender’s future.

As reported by the Mirror (22 August), Everton tabled a £5million offer for the 19-year-old and are pushing hard for a deal.

The Liverpool Echo claim the offer has been rejected by the Light Blues.

Steven Gerrard was quoted as claiming the £5million valuation had “come out of a joke book”.

Coleman, 32, signed a one-year contract extension this summer, keeping him at the club until the summer of 2023.

When asked if Patterson could be a long-term replacement for Coleman, Whelan told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, “Yeah, I really think he could be.

“When you look at the track record of full backs coming from Scotland to the Premier League. There’s a long list of quality isn’t there?

“He’s very highly regarded. But at the same time, when Premier League clubs come knocking, it would have to be more than £5million.

“He’s a player they produced and they don’t have to let him go. A cheeky bid of £5million will be laughed out of Ibrox.

“If they are serious about this player, he’s a big up and coming prospect and they need a right back.

“Coleman is still turning in good performances but he can’t do it forever, they need someone to fill that void.”
