Everton news: ‘£40m’ transfer claim issued after Jonjoe Kenny news – pundit

Noel Whelan has suggested Everton could save “£30-40million” by tying Jonjoe Kenny down to a new contract.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, admitted the Toffees’ financial fair play limits mean getting players to agree to new deals “makes more sense” than spending on new signings.

As reported by the Times on Friday (3 June), Everton have offered Kenny, 25, a new three-year deal as he heads into the final month of his current terms.

The report claims other Premier League clubs, as well as German sides, have shown interest in signing the right-back.

As revealed by Football Insider (23 May), Everton have also offered James Tarkowski a £120,000-a-week deal to join on a free transfer.

With Everton’s finances under scrutiny, Whelan suggested Everton are being sensible with their spending.

“The financial strain on the club right now, it’s probably something that makes more sense to them,” Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.

“If you are going to sell a player and use that money on the field, it’s probably better off spent in different areas that need strengthening.

“If you can get Tarkowski in and sign Kenny on a three-year deal, you’ve covered those bases. You can use whatever money comes in from a Richarlison or a Calvert-Lewin to strengthen in other areas.

“Look, he’s still a young player. A three-year contract? It’s cheaper doing that than going out and spending £30-40million when you could use it in other areas.”

A graduate of the club’s youth ranks, Kenny played 21 times for Everton during the 2021/22 campaign.
