Everton news: ‘Premier League wanted to impose five-point deduction’ – new details emerge

The Premier League initially wanted to impose a five-point deduction on Everton rather than just two.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that the Toffees’ sanction was reduced to two due to “mitigating circumstances”.

Sean Dyche’s side were hit with the sanction on Monday (8 April) – their second breach of the Premier League’s financial rules this season.

The charge related to their 2022-23 accounts where they breached the allowed loss threshold of £105million by £16.6million in the three-year rolling period to last season.

Everton could have faced a five-point deduction

Everton confirmed that they would appeal the decision soon after.

The club were hit with a 10-point deduction back in November for a separate breach of the league’s profit and sustainability rules.

However, this was successfully reduced to six in February after an appeal.

The Premier League’s independent commission that investigated the charges said that the starting point for any financial sanction is five points.

O’Rourke noted that the Merseysider’s early admission of guilt to the charge, sponsorship issues relating to the suspension of a deal with Russian company USM and factors relating to the build of their new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock saw their punishment reduced.

“The two-point deduction was no massive surprise,” he told the Inside Track podcast.

“I didn’t expect them to get the worst-case scenario.

“They were fighting against it and hoping to use double jeopardy to avoid another points deduction.

“Initially, the Premier League wanted to impose a five-point deduction on Everton, which I thought would have been harsh.

“I thought they would go for four like they did with Nottingham Forest.

“It was just a two-point deduction due to mitigating circumstances.

“Everton’s early plea helped them, sponsorship issues and the funding of their new stadium helped them get a lower deduction.”
