Everton news: Pundit accuses Premier League of ‘special treatment’ after ‘dangerous’ news

Everton have “opened a can of worms” after it emerged they have been getting “special treatment” from the Premier League.

That’s according to former Leeds United stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after about a development that could “backfire” on the Toffees.

On Wednesday (16 March) the Daily Mail reported Everton have reached an agreement with the Premier League in which they consult over player signings and new contracts to avoid breaching spending rules.

The club are yet to publish their 2020/21 accounts with the report claiming they will avoid disciplinary charges even though these accounts will show more heavy losses.

Kenny claims the Premier League are setting a dangerous precedent.

“It’s another problem Everton don’t need,” Kenny told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“We know the pandemic has not helped a lot of clubs but this could set a dangerous precedent.

“Other clubs will jump on that and say ‘well this is what you did for Everton, so do it for us’.

“They have opened a can of worms here and it might backfire on them if they aren’t careful.

“They have plenty of issues on the pitch so they need to avoid any more problems off it as well.

“We know they have spent too much money, you would think they will be punished for that.

“There can’t be any special treatment.”
