Everton news: Pundit issues ‘massive’ board plea after significant development at Goodison

Noel Whelan has urged Everton to “stick by” new manager Frank Lampard.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Toffees must now undertake a “long-term project” akin to Mikel Arteta’s transformation of Arsenal.

Everton confirmed the appointment of Lampard, 43, yesterday (31 January), with the former Chelsea boss penning a two-and-a-half-year deal at Goodison Park.

Transfer deadline day also saw two midfielders arrive at the club, with Dele Alli and Donny van de Beek both arriving from Tottenham and Man United respectively.

Whelan urged Everton to “go through the rough with the smooth” as the Merseysiders kick off an “exciting era” under Lampard.

“It’s a fresh start now for Everton,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“He’s got a fresh mind, he’s a young coach. Lampard also has the man-management skills to work with big names after having that experience with Chelsea.

“The fans wanted Frank Lampard too. And it’s good to see them getting a say as well because it’s their club.

“I think if you asked the majority of the Everton fans, they will be happy with that appointment.

“They need to give him some time. That’s massive. They’ve brought in some exciting signings – I’m sure he’ll get the best out of them.

“It’s an exciting era. They need to follow in the footsteps of Mikel Arteta and Arsenal – it’s a long-term project, not a quick fix.

“They have to go through the rough with the smooth and stick by him wherever possible. It’s crucial.”

Alli

Lampard’s first task is to overcome fellow Premier League side Brentford in the FA Cup fourth round this Saturday (5 February).

Alli is cup-tied for the clash but Van de Beek could take part.
