Everton news: Pundit issues ‘nightmare’ claim after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s dressing room reveal

Paul Robinson has backed Everton manager Frank Lampard’s decision to maintain faith in Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England goalkeeper said team selection is “a nightmare” for Lampard, 43, given his squad is “out of form and low on confidence.”

Calvert-Lewin was given the nod to start at Turf Moor on Wednesday night despite the fact he hasn’t scored since August.

Demarai Gray dropped to the bench to make room in the starting XI for Anthony Gordon as the Toffees lost 3-2 to deepen relegation fears.

Speaking to the GQ magazine (6 April), Calvert-Lewin said “morale was poor” in the dressing room with players feeling like they have “let the manager, the fans and the club down.”

When asked if Calvert-Lewin should be dropped, Robinson told Football Insider:

“There is not time for players to play their way into form but you have to start Calvert-Lewin. He is a quality player who has goals in him.

“Yes, it is difficult for him at the moment because they are down there for a reason. It is not just one or two of them, it is all of them. It is not just Calvert-Lewin. The only one coming out with any credit right now is Anthony Gordon.

“It is a nightmare for Frank because he is picking from a pool of players that are out of form and low on confidence. He has to just pick and team and hope they perform.

“I would have started Calvert-Lewin as well because he occupies defenders which allows others to create. He causes problems.”
