Everton news: Pundit tips Alex Iwobi for axe after ‘brilliant’ update
Noel Whelan has claimed Alex Iwobi could be dropped from the Everton side as Frank Lampard accommodates the potential returns of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Demarai Gray.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 43-year-old boss has to “take the game” to tonight’s opponents Tottenham.
Everton face Spurs in north London tonight (7 March) with the opportunity to pull four points clear of relegation trouble.
Lampard, speaking to club media on Friday (4 March), revealed Calvert-Lewin and Gray will be assessed prior to the game to determine their readiness.
The Toffees boss insisted he is “hopeful” that the striker will be able to take part.
Whelan claimed Everton star Anthony Gordon is performing “too well to be dropped”.
“Iwobi’s got to come out,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.
“It’s unfortunate, but right now Frank will be wanting to play his best eleven – and Anthony Gordon is playing too well to be dropped.
“Especially in a game like tonight against a good Tottenham side. Gray has caused havoc at times since coming in last summer – he can get you assists and goals down that right-hand side, and you’d hate to play against him.
“Calvert-Lewin coming in is a real no brainer. They’ve been missing that natural centre-forward all season, that’s why they’ve struggled.
“It’s brilliant to have them back but those two have got to come in because they’ve got to go out and try and take the game to Tottenham.

“Everton need a result and Lampard can’t stand by and let Spurs punish them.
“You’ve got to put your best foot forward. Tottenham are so inconsistent – you can get joy out of that defence.”
