Everton news: Pundit ‘very surprised’ by Dele Alli after what he’s seen
Paul Robinson is “very surprised” by Dele Alli’s lack of game time for Everton this year.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Tottenham and England goalkeeper suspects the 25-year-old defensive frailties are the reason why.
Alli is yet to start a game since moving to Goodison Park on loan for the remainder of the season in January.
That is despite the Toffees winning only two Premier League games since his arrival.
As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (6 March), Frank Lampard insisted he has “massive belief” in the attacking midfielder despite his lack of minutes.
When asked by Football Insider if he’s been surprised by Alli’s lack of involvement, Robinson said: “I’ve been very surprised, to be honest with you.
“When you look at the players there and where they are in the league, I thought Dele Alli would have a real effect on them.
“I still believe he can given game time. He has the quality.
“His lack of defensive capabilities is perhaps what is hampering him. Frank probably sees him as an attacking player, a luxury player if you like.
“When you are down there struggling, you try and make your teams defensively solid and hard to beat. There is certain players who you cannot afford to have in your side. Dele is one of those, even though I think he’s a game-changer.

“I’m surprised by his lack of game time because I thought he’d have a big impact.
“I understand what Frank is doing though, he’s trying to build a robust team that is hard to beat.”
