Everton news: This may be real reason Dominic Calvert-Lewin ‘annoyed’ after what pundit spotted

Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s angry reaction to being substituted at West Ham was born out of frustration with his own performance.

That is the view of 2000 European Golden Shoe winner Kevin Phillips, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 25-year-old’s struggles.

Calvert-Lewin is yet to score since returning from a toe injury in January.

The England international played 78 minutes of Everton’s 2-1 loss at West Ham on Sunday before being replaced by Anthony Gordon.

The decision angered the centre-forward, who cast a frustrated figure on the Toffees’ bench.

When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his thoughts on Calvert-Lewin’s struggles, Phillips said:

“It is going to take a while for him to get back up to the pace of it after being out for six months.

“For me, his reaction was out of frustration with his own performance. Given where Everton are in the league, I’m sure he feels pressure to score goals. He will be desperate to get them out of the situation they are in.

“It is frustration and you want that. You want to see a player be annoyed at coming off and especially if he hasn’t played well. Players shouldn’t just accept it.

“He is a player that wants to do well. He will get back to his best but I think it will take longer than he first thought.”

West Ham

Calvert-Lewin has scored three goals in 11 appearances this season.

Frank Lampard’s side are 17th in the table.
