Everton news: This may be real reason for Nathan Patterson struggles as message sent to Lampard
Everton manager Frank Lampard continually selects Seamus Coleman ahead of Nathan Patterson because of his “leadership qualities”.
That is the view of ex-Tottenham and England number one Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Patterson’s struggle for game time at Goodison Park.
Last Thursday, Patterson produced a man of the match display for Scotland in a 1-1 draw with Poland at Hampden Park.
The right-back did not show any signs of rustiness despite having played just once for the Toffees since his arrival from Rangers in January.
As quoted by the Daily Record (27 March), Patterson said he hopes “everyone was watching” in what appeared to be a message to his club manager Frank Lampard.
When asked why the Scotland international can’t get a game for Everton, Robinson told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs:
“Seamus Coleman’s leadership qualities are probably what has given him the edge into the side.
“When you are in a relegation scrap like that it is very hard to look any further than making your team robust and hard to beat. You are looking for people who are warriors. That’s what you want in your team.

“I think that is what has kept Patterson and Dele Alli out of the team. They perhaps don’t meet mould of robust and hard to beat.
“Coleman’s leadership qualities, determination and voice is probably what has kept Patterson out.”
